- Abstract
The book "Het Nederlandse liefdeslied in de middeleeuwen" by Frank Willaert provides a comprehensive overview of Dutch love poetry in the Middle Ages. The author systematically examines all evidence of this song culture, from the earliest records in the 11th century to the collections from the 15th century. This includes historiographical evidence, letters, documents, and other poems. Dutch love poetry shows a mixture of Romance and German influences and develops its own character, characterized by joy and dance. The poets Heinrich von Veldeke and Johann von Brabant, whose works are preserved in the Codex Manesse, are particularly highlighted. The text deals with the connection between Minnesang and Romance poetry. It is mentioned that Johann von Brabant writes German texts but follows the form of French poetry. The mystic Hadewijch is also mentioned, who creates her own poetic tradition. The influence of Johann von Brabant on Dutch poetry in the 14th and 15th centuries is also discussed. The text ends with a discussion of song manuscripts from the 15th century that continue the literary type. The article is about Middle Dutch love songs and their significance for Western European love poetry. The author, Bart Willaert, examines various manuscripts and their social contexts to understand the development and embedding of the literary type. He places particular focus on the "Haager Liederhandschrift," the "Berliner Liederhandschrift," and the "Gruuthuse Manuscript." Willaert emphasizes the neglect of this song type in research and calls for a broader reception and recognition of Middle Dutch love songs. His book is considered a central reference work for engaging with this topic.
