- Abstract
Objective: To determine the level of ethical attitudes of social and health professionals in the care of institutionalized elderly people. Methodology: Cross-sectional descriptive multicentre multicentre study. The study population was the social-health care staff working in public residences for the elderly in the Community of Madrid and in three geriatric units of public hospitals in the same community. The data were collected by means of the Ethical attitudes for social and healthcare professionals in the field of dependency scale between January and December 2022. The questionnaire was administered by means of an electronic link sent by email to the participants and with face-to-face administration by the heads of the centres and the researchers. In the statistical analysis of the data, qualitative variables are presented in frequency tables and quantitative variables with the mean and 95%CI. Results: The level of bioethical education of the participants is low. However, they show great interest in training in this area. The principles to which the professionals show the best attitudes are confidentiality (3.81/5) and beneficence (3.66/5). The principles of autonomy (3.17/5) and non-maleficence (3.53/5) receive lower scores. Conclusions: The attitudes of professionals towards the ethical principles of autonomy and nonmaleficence are the ones that obtain the worst results. The interest of professionals in bioethics training should be used to influence education in this area.
