- Abstract
This article provides a historical overview of coup d'états in Niger, with a focus on the most recent one in July 2023. It discusses the country's history of political instability, including previous coups and authoritarian rule. The article also mentions challenges faced by Niger, such as the exploitation of its uranium reserves by France, secessionist violence, and the presence of Islamist insurgencies. The 2023 coup was carried out by a group of soldiers citing security concerns and bad governance. The text highlights the political instability and economic impoverishment in Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, which has allowed extremist groups to thrive in the region. The NATO-led intervention in Libya in 2011 resulted in the influx of arms and extremism into these countries. The recent coup in Niger against President Mohamed Bazoum was driven by dissatisfaction with the security situation and neocolonial economic conditions. However, the author cautions against supporting military coups as a solution, emphasizing the importance of political and economic enfranchisement for the masses. The voices and desires of the people of Niger should be prioritized in determining the country's future.
