- Title
Wrecks as reefs: tourism solution or titanic problem?
- Authors
Burton, Adrian
- Abstract
The article discusses the impact of the used of artificial reefs, such as ship wrecks, subway cars, and other man-made reefs, as a solution for tourism or a major problem for the environment in Key West, Florida. The use of artificial reefs are often projected as a marine form of greening the desert. Certainly, recreational fishermen will vouch that these artificial reefs are a great spot for angling. Moreover, artificial reefs also provide diving opportunities, which will encourage local tourism. However, the director of Florida State University's Coastal and Marine Laboratory, Felicia Coleman, explains that there is certainly a potential ecological risk when artificial structures are placed on the sea floor.
