- Abstract
The state of São Paulo, due to the size of its population and its level of development and economic performance, exerts a strong influence in determining the level of poverty at the national level. Despite showing positive economic aspects, the income distribution does not present equality, since 26% of the population lives under poverty. The objective of this study was to analyze the spatial distribution of poverty in the municipalities of São Paulo, in 1991 and 2000. We used the Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis (ESDA) technique. The results indicate the existence of spatial dependence of poverty in the cities of the state and the formation of a major poverty cluster in the Litoral Sul- Paulista and Itapetininga regions, and other smaller ones in the Presidente Prudente and Vale do Paraíba regions. However, a wealth cluster is found in the Campinas, Piracicaba and Bauru regions. Thus, it is clear that poverty is more present in the municipalities that are distant from the state's industrial centers. The knowledge of the spatial distribution of poverty in the cities of São Paulo could help to support policies aimed at minimizing poverty in the state's poorest regions.
