The article presents information on a set of experiments, conducted by James Franck and Gustav L. Hertz, to study the ionization potential of different gases, collisions between gasmolecules and slow electrons, and the ionization potential of mercury vapor. Hertz and Franck won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1925 for discovering the laws related to the impact of an electron upon an atom.
