- Abstract
This article focuses on the strategies adopted in Allan Bennett's play the Madness of George III to characterize the King's transition from sanity to madness, a transition which is the core of the plot and which shapes the characterization of the dramatic personae and on the solutions adopted by Franco Salvatorelli in his exquisite Italian translation La Pazzia di Re Giorgio. In the play strategic use of some of the features of deviant schizophrenic language is able to suggest that King George is losing his wits, and later in the play, that he is on the way to recovery. Close analysis of the strategies used in the source text is a necessary first step in conveying the character's development in the translated text.
