- Abstract
The article presents a study which determines the costs, consequences, and contributing factors associated with workers' compensation (WC) livestock-handling injury claims among cattle dealers, cattle/livestock raisers, and dairy farmers in Colorado. The data that were used in the study were provided by the Colorado's largest WC insurer, Pinnacol Assurance. To assign occupational sectors, Pinnacol Assurance has used a standardized Risk Classification Codes that are outlined in the National Council on Compensation Insurance Inc. (NCCI) "Scopes Manual." Results show that livestock-handling injuries are frequent in the dairy and beef industries, which appeared to be severe and costly relative to other causes of injury or illness.
