- Title
North Pacific 'blob' stirs up fisheries management.
- Authors
Gewin, Virginia
- Abstract
The article discusses the impact of an unusually warm mass of water, referred to as "the blob," located in the northern Pacific Ocean on the nutrients delivered to coastal waters where migratory salmon, tuna, and whales forage. Topics include the need for fisheries managers to use ecosystem-based management approaches for decision making, and the Pacific Fishery Management Council's endorsement of ecosystem-based computer models to base catch recommendations.
