The dynamics of sulfur dioxide oxidation by oxygen in tropospheric clouds at night is analyzed. A crucial role in this free-radical process is played by the uptake of 'nocturnal' NO radicals from the gas phase. Size effects in chemical reactions involving nocturnal NO have been discovered.
