- Abstract
Donald Keefe, S.J., in Covenantal Theology, has developed a theological system which takes the central theme of Humani generis with regard to original sin seriously. He points out that taking the Fall seriously requires an act by an individual, an Adam, at the first metaphysical moment of creation rejecting the gift of headship offered to him. Creation is in the Son who is sent by the Father to give the Spirit, the prime analogate of the Good Creation, but the sin of Adam ensured that the Son would become incarnate in fallen, rather than unfallen, flesh. We are metaphysically in union with the sin of the First Adam only because of the primordiality of the Second Adam--the causality of Adam's sin is only negative. Keefe argues that traditional Thomism, because of its reliance on the monist logic of Aristotle, tends to undermine the doctrine of original sin and dehistoricize the faith of the Church.
