- Abstract
"El Mosquito" was the name of a satirical burlesque cartoon newspaper which was founded in Buenos Aires on 24th, May 1863. It was directed by Henri Meyer until 1868 and then by Henri Stein up to its closure on 16th, June 1893. It can be considered the first professional newspaper which resorted to caricature as the central tool to express its scathing criticism and also made it its main attraction. The first publications coincided with the beginning of Bartolomé Mitre's presidency (1862-1868) who strengthened the unification of Argentina nearly after a decade of divisions between Buenos Aires and the rest of the Confederation. The unstable political situation generated a deliberative atmosphere in which the newspapers spread over and stated their opinion regarding political factions and parties which sought to bring the society together under their proposals. The copies belonging to the first year of circulation (1863-1864) are analysed in the present work in order to see how "El Mosquito" built its satirical discourse in relation to Bartolomé Mitre's presidency.
