- Abstract
Proceeding from the question of what political theology means, this article aims to present political theology as the most appropriate context for evaluating Karl Marx. Although politics and theology are designations that point to different human activities, it can be said that there is a situation that exceeds the similarity between them in terms of the functions they carry decisively. This similarity is historically, 'systematic' and 'structural.' The main claim of political theology is that all the concepts belonging to the modern theory of the state have been transferred from theology. Therefore, political theology can also be considered in the form of 'theological politics'. The main feature of the political secular movements (Marxism, nationalism, socialism, etc.) in the modern period, especially in the nineteenth century, is to find a solution to a problem, to make certain promises, or to place either a single nation or all humanity in a just, harmonious and prosperous social order. These movements promise 'salvation' just like a religion. Marx's political thought is also on this line. Revolution, proletariat, alienation, private property, classless society, communism are at the heart of Marx's views. Political theology suggests that theological terminology can be linked to political language. In terms of the theology's terminology, revolution is parallel to the apocalypse, the proletariat is parallel to the heralded revolutionary Messiah, alienation and private property are original sin, communism is parallel to the concept of heaven. Undoubtedly, it is not possible to consume Marx in the category of a 'Jewish thinker'. However, the views put forward by Marx can be evaluated in the category of political secular-Messianism.
