- Authors
Jáuregui, Carlos A.
- Abstract
The article examines the legend and literary tradition of the "Negro comegente" (man-eating Negro), which emerged in the Dominican Republic during the 18th century. It analyzes this legend, which portrays an unstoppable, cannibalistic, black Haitian serial killer who terrorizes the Dominican Republic, in the context of Dominican nationalism. The article considers the legend as part of a Dominican conspiracy against Haitians borne out of the fear of being overwhelmed and absorbed by Haiti during the Haitian revolution.
