- Abstract
This article examines the utilization and payments for home UVB phototherapy among United States Medicare beneficiaries from 2000 to 2021. Home phototherapy is an alternative to in-office phototherapy that offers greater accessibility and convenience for patients. The study found that home phototherapy volume has increased over the years, with an average annual growth rate of 27.3%. However, overall use remains relatively low, with less than 5000 units utilized. The study also highlights a shift in the type of UV light therapy systems used, with smaller systems becoming more prevalent. The article emphasizes the need for further research to understand the reasons behind these trends and their impact on patient outcomes. It also acknowledges the barriers that still exist, such as upfront costs and lack of provider familiarity and training. The study's limitations include the lack of patient demographics and clinical indications in the datasets used and the exclusion of certain patient groups.
