- Title
Best Practices in Thwarting MERLIN Concerns.
- Authors
Bolte, C. Clint
- Abstract
The article explores the guidelines for the United States Postal Service's Mailing Evaluation Readability Lookup Instrument (MERLIN), built under exclusive contract by Bell & Howell. The Postal Service implemented procedures focused around the system to verify barcode readability and consistency, along with a number of other direct mail manual standards criteria. Vendors that have relationships with their clients and run well-maintained equipment should encounter few adverse run-ins with MERLIN. Over the longer term, MERLIN can contribute to smoothing mail flow, improving predictable delivery times and helping contain postal costs.
