A lethal witches broom disease of buckthorn (<em>Rhamnus catharticus</em>) has been observed in south-western Germany. The disease is associated with the presence of a distinct phytoplasma that is most closely related to the phytoplasmas of the apple proliferation cluster. However, the agent can clearly be distinguished from the other cluster members.
