- Abstract
The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the cognitive levels of testing agricultural science in senior secondary schools in Botswana. The specific objective was to determine the cognitive levels of testing Agriculture Paper 1: (a) Section A, (b) Section B, and (c) Section C in the Cambridge Overseas School Certificate (COSC) Examination from 1989 - 1999. The questions in Agriculture Paper 1 were classified into the cognitive levels at which they were tested by the use of sample questions' and characteristic words. Findings indicated that the majority of the questions in Sections A and C were at the knowledge level of the cognitive domain of Bloom's taxonomy of educational objectives. In Section B of the examination paper, most of the questions were written at the knowledge level of the cognitive domain. It is recommended in the study that: (1) the levels of testing COSC Agricultural Paper 1 be extended to higher cognitive levels; and (2) a study be conducted to determine the cognitive levels of teaching agricultural science in senior secondary schools in Botswana.
