- Title
Potential survival benefit with lumpectomy for patients with early-stage breast cancer.
- Authors
Barton, Mary Kay
- Abstract
The author comments on a study which investigated whether the similar survival rates of breast-conserving therapy (BCT) and mastectomy noted in randomized trials may also apply to the general population. The researchers concluded that the increased survival advantage of BCT is greatest among women aged 50 years and older. It also cites a study published in "Cancer" which found that BCT improved the disease-specific survival of women with stage I or II breast cancer compared with mastectomy.
