- Abstract
In the 1840's the Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis (1818- 1865) proposed a hypothesis to explain the cause of childbed fever. This fever occurred in the postpartum period leading to death mothers and newborns. Through his study he excluded the causes that have been suggested at that time, concluding that the decomposed material of every cadaver could produce it. The "cadaveric matter" present in the hands of doctors after performing dissections would infect patients during the gynecological examination and childbirth, producing the childbed fever. However, his hypothesis was not accepted by the scientific community of the time. The historiography displays some reasons for this: theoretical, experimental, and institutional ones. Our aim is to describe the Semmelweis' contribution concerning this subject and to discuss the reasons for non-acceptance of his hypothesis.
