- Abstract
With the beginning of 19th century, the political and economic developments and the progress in the transportation facilities brought about an increase in the number of visitors to Istanbul. Modern places were needed for the accommodation of these new guests, and the hotels began to serve for this purpose. Hotel d'Angleterre, founded in 1841, was the symbol of this transitional period from traditional guesthouses to modern hotels. The hotel enjoyed its brightest period during the Crimean War and hosted many British, French officers, journalists and politicians. Both the hotel and its founder and director for 40 years, James Missire, were frequently mentioned in many newspaper columns and memoir books. Despite some adverse criticism of its guests, Hotel d'Angletere remained as the best hotel of İstanbul until its very last years and disappeared from the scene of history through a fire in 1894.
