- Abstract
The Young Turk Revolution of 1908 opened a new era for the Ottoman press by putting an end to Abdulhamit's despotism. During this new era, the press found a free environment for publishing as opposed to the Hamidian period which applied a strict control over the press by banning numerous topics. Just after the Young Turk revolution, the banned topics including the debates over religious reform, became discussable. The reform of the madrasas, delivering religious sermons in Turkish, the translation of Koran into Turkish and the use of Turkish in worship became the main topics of the religious reform. This article aims to evaluate the debate regarding Turkish sermons in Sırat-ı Müstakim, which was one of the most important journals of the period in Islamist line, by analyzing the social and political needs triggering the use of Turkish in sermons.
