- Abstract
The article discusses the responses of the intergovernmental military alliance the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to Soviet proposals to denuclearize the Balkans and the Mediterranean region from 1957 to 1963. It comments on denuclearization proposals by Romanian Prime Minister Chivu Stoica and Polish Foreign Minister Adam Rapacki. The author considers the positions of the Cold War-era military alliance known as the Warsaw Pact, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, and U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
