- Abstract
The article examines the important role played by photography and film campaigns in the exculpation and expansion of U.S. petroleum industries. Topics discussed include the investigation into the relationship between Standard Oil of New Jersey (SONJ) and the German petrochemical firm IG Farben, the use of the so-called rhetoric of recruitment in the photography of films that promoted oil in the 1940s, and the SONJ photography project and "Louisiana Story."
