- Title
The Impact of Work Stress and Lack of Harmony on Police Officer Performance.

- Abstract
Jaramillo, Nixon, and Sams (2005) tell us "Law enforcement is a particularly stressful occupation due to a number of sources from within the organizational structure itself, such as role ambiguity, role conflict, lack of supervisor support, lack of group cohesiveness, and lack of promotional opportunities" (p. 322). Likewise, Gershon, Barocas, Canton, Li, and Vlahov (2009) find "organizational stressors, not critical incidents, are most strongly associated with perceived police stress" (p. 284) and that a primary source of stress within policing is the "distinctly bureaucratic nature of most police organizations" (Zhao, He, & Lovrich, 2002, p. 44). This study examines the factors associated with work stress, the lack of harmony within law enforcement, and how it can be handled.
