The article examines nominal appellatives and place names of Baltic origin borrowed or inherited from the linguistic substrate by the northern Slavic languages, and seeks to explain under what circumstances and for which reasons Baltic and Lithuanian endings remained unchanged in the loanwords, or when and how they did change in their adaptation to the phonetic and morphological features of the Slavic languages.
