- Abstract
The article analyses from a gender perspective the first phase of Gure Artea prize (1982-1995), the most relevant art competition in the Basque Country. Among other questions, the authors review the proportional participation of women artists in different editions, observing if these percentages varied depending on the artistic genre or if these numbers coincided with the awards. The article also studies the influence that the jury of each edition might have had upon the identified gender bias. On the other hand, it also reflects on the consequences of the competition: how it differently promoted the production of female and male artists of the time, and how the prize influenced the formations and legitimization of the dominant Basque art historiography, as well as the configuration of the Basque Government's public collection.
