- Abstract
The article explores the history cross-cultural friendship and the early salt-pork trade between the New South Wales government and the Pomare family of Tahiti. It discusses the instances that illuminate the legal meanings of Taio, including a jurisdictional conflict between members of the Missionary Society and the Pomares family, the diplomatic friendship between Governor Philip Gidley King and Pomare, and the traders' disputes with Pomare over military alliance and the terms of trade.
