- Abstract
This article explores the need for equity in policies that restrict the sale of flavored nicotine and tobacco products, such as menthol. It highlights the negative impact of structural racism and colonization on population and public health, and the disproportionate use of flavored tobacco among socially disadvantaged groups. The article examines the global movement to ban flavored tobacco and evaluates the equity implications of these policies. It also discusses the effects of flavor restrictions on nicotine and tobacco use, retail practices, and community perceptions. The goal is to raise awareness about the racial and social justice implications of these policies and promote fair health outcomes. The article emphasizes the importance of considering equity when evaluating flavor policies and involving diverse stakeholders in the process. It provides recommendations for study design and methods that prioritize community engagement and address structural factors that influence policy evaluation. This article is part of a supplement sponsored by the University of California, Office of the President, Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program.
