- Abstract
The interaction with atmospheric air results in spontaneous adsorption or loss of moisture by the wood until there is water vapor saturation pressure in the air at a certain temperature, this condition is called equilibrium moisture content (EMC), which depends on the weather conditions of each region and/or time of year. As a result, fluctuations in temperature and humidity cause dimensional changes and material defects. Thus, the zoning and seasonality of EMC are fundamental in the processing and application of wood. In this context, geotechnologies are inserted, which make it easy to obtain these parameters with considerable precision, especially in places with lack of climatological data, where wood has high economic importance, as is the case of the state of Rondônia, North of Brazil. The objective was to carry out the seasonal zoning of the EMC in 8 municipalities in the State of Rondônia (3 to the north, 1 to the south, 2 to the east and 2 to the west). The region's climate is characterized by an average annual temperature of 25 ° C, relative humidity above 70%, annual rainfall around 1200 mm and a dry season from June to September. From the Network of Automatic Meteorological Stations of the State Department of Environmental Development of Rondônia and the National Institute of Meteorology, meteorological data were obtained between 2002 and 2018. The EMC was estimated by the Simpson method daily, with subsequent monthly averages for at least five years analyzed. Subsequently, the EMC data were georeferenced and interpolated by ordinary kriging, using the inverse square of the distance (IDW), generating zoning maps for all months of the year. The EMC fluctuated between 10% to 22% in the year, in the dry season the variation was between 10.83% to 15.55%, with the lowest values in August. In the wettest months the EMC varied between 16.61% to 21.58%, with the highest average observed in January. Environmental conditions during the dry season (July to September) favor the natural drying of lumber, as they condition faster drying. The use of geotechnologies provided the study of EMC in Rondônia in a practical and dynamic way.
