- Title
The Mixed Blessing of Phosphor-Based White LEDs.
- Authors
Spivey, Angela
- Abstract
The article focuses on the impact of phosphor-based white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on environment and public health. It is said that LEDs are energy efficient and they also last longer than compact fluorescent lights and incandescent lamps. But some researchers believe that blue light, emitted by LEDs and other short-wavelength lights suppress production of melatonin which disrupts sleep/wake cycle. Melatonin suppression also increases risk of breast cancer.
