- Abstract
Experiments with the purpose to study the prevalence of various grasses, their efficiency and grass mixes of various botanical structure in haymaking and miscellaneous usage were carried out at the Vokė Branch of the Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry. Grasses were grown on Haplic Luvisol without nitrogen fertilizers and using only ecological phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. The usage of sward mixes and their botanical structure depended mainly on the varieties of grass, which were characterized by different competitive power. It was found that both in haymaking and in mixes the use of hybrid lucerne (Medicago sativa), early red clover (Trifolium pratense praecox L.), Festulolium (Festulolium braunii K. A.), meadow pointer (Festuca pratensis Peel.), timothy (Excuse phleum L.) and white clover (Rehandles trifolia L.), Secale sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.), hop lucerne (Medicago lupulina L.), lotus (Lotus corniculatus L.) showed no strong competitive power. From perennial grass varieties, in grassland, mostly general yarrow, bitter hardness, dandelion were distributed. Annual grasses made only 1.2%. The hybrids of lucerne, white clover, red clover, early usual lotus and meadow pointer gave the highest crop. Their dry mass yield was 8.73-10.03 t ha-1. The mowed grasland was more fertile (6.47 by 10.03 t ha-1), and on mixed grasslands the harvest was lower (6.02-9.64 t ha-1).
