- Title
Early Attempts to Improve the Daguerreotype.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the attempts to improve the early daguerreotype process of L. J. M. Daguerre. In 1840, the Socieété d'Encouragement pour I'Industrie Nationale conducted a competition and offered awards to those who could improve the daguerreotype process so that it could become commercially and artistically viable. The works of the two winners of the Socieété d'Encouragement's competition were found in the collection of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. One is a view taken at the Luxembourg Palace in Paris, France, by Jean-Francois Soleil and the other is a view of the Notre Dame Cathedral by Louis Breton and Andre Breton. Information related to the two photographic plates and the photographers is presented.
