- Abstract
The different myths about the merman's love for his beloved reflect Kierkegaard's different attitudes toward Regina. What they have in common, between the lover and the beloved, is a frigid silence that expresses the unsurmountable suffering of both. These myths also represent the different aspects of Abraham's love for God, for his son Isaac and his wife Sarah. He keeps the same silence before all of them, without offering any justification; perhaps the most important thing represented by the merman's different kinds of love is all of God's love for humanity, wrapped in utter silence.
