- Abstract
The article discusses the importance of caterpillars in ecosystems and their role as a food source for birds, particularly migratory and breeding bird populations. The Caterpillars Count! project, based at the University of North Carolina, is a citizen science initiative that aims to address knowledge gaps related to seasonal changes among birds, caterpillars, and plants in a changing climate. Students participating in the project will make observations, collect data, and explore the relationship between arthropods and the food needs of birds. The project provides resources for educators and encourages students to develop a deeper sense of environmental stewardship and curiosity about the natural world.
