- Abstract
This article presents a review on a study regarding linguistics and the psychology of language. The three departments of generative linguistic theory are, correspondingly, phrase-structure grammar, transformation rules and phonological rules. These formulations have struck at the roots of, and have required a re-examination of, nearly all linguistic theory. There is an important wing of experimental psychology devoted to the exploration of reinforcement as the critical variable in learning and behavior. By now, it seems to have been well demonstrated that positive reinforcement is a potent variable for maintaining behavior of a given kind, although it is by no means clear that reinforcement is either necessary or sufficient.
