- Abstract
This article discusses the risk of HPV infection among dermatologists and the lack of preparedness in addressing this risk. HPV is a highly contagious virus associated with various conditions, including sexually transmitted and malignant conditions. Dermatologists often treat HPV-related lesions using procedures that may aerosolize the virus, potentially putting themselves at risk of infection. A survey of Irish dermatologists found that many were unaware of this risk and did not use proper protective measures, such as wearing masks or using extraction systems. The majority of participants expressed concern about occupational HPV transmission and stated that they would avail of the HPV vaccine if it were offered to them. The article suggests that education and improved safety standards are needed to address this issue.
