- Abstract
This paper aims to provide an overview of the history of French-Canadian missionary journals in the twentieth century. Three periods shape this history of missionary journals: the multiplication of journals for informing and propagating the faith (1900-1944), the challenges of the missionary press (1945-1960) and the questioning in relation with a wider process of secularization (1961-2000). This overview provides a better understanding of the apostolic activities of the French-Canadian Church emphasizing the material and ideological transformations of these publications. Beyond the projected image, the proselytism, the prejudices and the racism that they convey, these journals retrace the evolution of the Catholic Church and its missionary movement as well as the evolution of Quebec society and its relationship to foreign societies and cultures.
