- Abstract
The federal election in 2021 was characterized by exceptional circumstances, as Angela Merkel did not run for Chancellor again. Armin Laschet and Markus Söder fought for the leadership of the CDU/CSU, while Annalena Baerbock was appointed as the Green Party's candidate for Chancellor. Olaf Scholz was already announced as the SPD's candidate for Chancellor in August 2020. The coronavirus pandemic fundamentally changed the election campaign and led to a high number of postal votes. The provisional result of the election was announced on September 27th. The traffic light coalition of the SPD, Greens, and FDP formed the new federal government under Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The article sheds light on the background and issues of the 2021 federal election, including internal conflicts within the CDU/CSU and the weaknesses of the Chancellor candidates. The main topics were the coronavirus pandemic, climate change, digitalization, housing and social justice, as well as fiscal policy and taxes. Regional differences in voting behavior and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the election campaign are also examined. The German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES) is presented as the central survey program for election research in Germany.
