- Abstract
This paper describes the current situation of small-scale fishing in Puerto Madero, Chiapas, based on empirical information collected in situ through ethnographic methods such as observation and interview. First, to give a general characterization of the activity, I briefly contextualize the study area and retrieve discussions from maritime anthropology. Then, I identify the social stakeholders involved in the process from capture to commercialization, and characterize three specific ways for obtaining and distributing fishery products that complement each other to diversify production and markets. Finally, my ethnographic research concludes with the discussion of some problems that, in the perspective of the interlocutors, affect fishing nowadays, which will serve as baseline for further research.
