- Abstract
The authors describe Webern's situation thus: Webern's relationship with his two "fathers" was complex ... Carl Webern was not in a position to give Webern advice about his music. In the absence so far of the complete Berg-Webern correspondence in the I Briefwechsel der Wiener Schule i series, the chapter on the relationship between Berg and Webern, entitled "An Unlikely Friendship", is especially useful, as is that on "The War". Berg's devotion to Schoenberg was every bit as intense as Webern's, but his more practical nature did not preclude his reminding Schoenberg from time to time that he had a life beyond his work for his mentor, in particular family duties that he could not escape.
