- Abstract
Although it is one of the longest-standing problems that philosophers have been working on since ancient times, how exactly the relationship between the soul and the body is realized has still not been fully resolved. Plato, one of the leading philosophers who accepted the soul and body as two different substances in ancient times, argued that the soul would exist after the body died and that the souls who reached the world of ideas would reach salvation. This can be considered an important start for dualism. Plato's concept of idea also includes his solution to the separation of soul and body. This problem, which was defined as the soul-body relationship in the classical period, started to be referred to as the mindbody problem with Descartes, and later studies were shaped around the concept of mind and the structure of the mind. Descartes's departure from the traditional structure known as the "soul doctrine" marked the beginning of a new era in the mind-body problem in modern philosophy. Descartes, who argued that the interaction of mind and body with each other is provided through the pineal gland in the brain, gave extensive information about how soul spirits function. The mind-body problem was a subject that was studied only by philosophers before, because the understanding of the immortal soul is an indispensable and intangible view of religions, and since even the discussion of the immortality of the soul as a mistake requires taking the reaction of many people, scientists have preferred to stay away from this subject. In this study, Plato's and Descartes' perspectives on the separation of soul and body will be included, and Plato's soul and body dualism and the concept of soul spirits used by Descartes in soul and body dualism and the explanations he brought to dualism will be tried to be discussed.
