- Abstract
Short stories in English Language Teaching (ELT) are considered as materials that have a lot of positive effects such as motivation (Lazar, 1990), improving individual participation (Collie & Slater, 1987) and boosting other language skills (McKay, 2001), and providing opportunities to use creativity (Arıoğlu, 2001). However, there is still insufficient data of the characteristics of short stories used in ELT for children. It is necessary to systematically assess short stories' appropriateness for children and their language in ELT. In this study, two checklists were designed to assess short stories' language and appropriateness for children. The checklists were developed in four stages: Determining the characteristics of appropriate short stories, drafting the checklists, taking the views of the experts, and piloting them. Besides, checklists were implemented through evaluating 20 authentic short stories. The implementations show that the checklists are able to assess short stories' appropriateness for children and their language in a systematic way. However, while using the checklists, the language experts and/or English language teachers need to consider that the tools are open to be improved, and rater training is necessary regarding the appropriateness of short stories for children.
