- Title
The Forgotten Age of Swedish Shipping: The Eighteenth Century.
- Authors
Müller, Leos
- Abstract
In this essay I analyze the role of shipping in Sweden's eighteenth-century history by describing its development and isolating the factors that accounted for its growth. There were three explanatory variables: state policy on trade and shipping; the nation's place in the international arena; and the demand for carrying capacity in Sweden's foreign trade. While the Swedish Navigation Act of 1724 excluded foreign carriers from Sweden's import trade and stimulated the growth of domestic tonnage, the expansion of foreign trade also helped. More important, however, was Sweden's status as a small neutral state after 1721, especially during the Anglo-French conflicts in the second half of the century.
