- Abstract
The article presents information about the distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables in the United States. Details related to the first long-distance shipment of strawberries in ice-cooled chests are presented. A discussion is presented about innovations in refrigerated technology allowing for cooled train cars capable of keeping produce cool for long periods of time. Statistical information related to the volume of fresh produce transported in the United States is presented. The article also discusses methods of distribution, shipping logistics, auctions, and the differences between various types of merchants in the wholesale trade.
