- Abstract
The article discusses the utopian theories of Basque author Pío Baroja and his proposal of a Basque contra-utopia, the Bidasoa Republic. Presented as an opposition to the theocratic utopian theories of Bizkaitarrismo in the Basque Country, the Bidasoa Republic is based on freedom, tolerance, and an absence of Catholicism or any religion. Baroja's ideas are examined in the context of Basque nationalism in the early 20th Century, and his books "La Leyenda de Jaun de Alzate," "El Cura de Monleón," and "Momentum Catastrophicum" are analyzed.
