- Abstract
The article presents an examination of the history of labor unions and immigration in the U.S. entertainment industry from the 1880s to the 1930s. Introductory details are given noting the rise in competition between domestic and foreign entertainers during the period, as well as the paradox of simultaneous prejudice against and demand for their exotic characteristics. The racial dynamics between opponents and supporters of immigrant entertainment workers are examined. Additional subjects discussed in detail include the status and treatment of Chinese immigrants, measures which extended temporary legal status to immigrant entertainment workers, and the political influence of labor unions such as the Actors' Equity Association and the Screen Actors Guild.
