- Abstract
The article examines the career of the Victorian dramatist and librettist W. S. Gilbert. It explores Gilbert's views on social injustice and discusses how he differed from the establishment figures he is often discussed alongside by targeting institutions such as the Church of England and the British political system. It examines how various works displayed his skills as a satirist including "HMS Pinafore," "Patience" and "The Pirates of Penzance." It also discusses the contributions that Gilbert made to English national identity and social change.
