- Abstract
The article discusses the career of Louise de Bettignies (1880-1918), a French spy who worked for Great Britain during World War I, gathering intelligence on German positions and troop movements across occupied northern France and Belgium. Her capture and death in a German prison are discussed, as are her background and education in Great Britain and France, and her training as an intelligence operative. Postwar memorials and activities commemorating her service are also described, including the marking of the 130th anniversary of her birth in her hometown of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, France.
