- Abstract
Objective: The purpose was to study the social representations of sustainability standard NTS-T 002 in accommodation micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) entrepreneurs in a province of the department of Boyacá (Colombia). The study also reflected on what kind of standards may introduce changes in the internal and external environment of organizations. Method: The methodology implemented was a qualitative approach, using phenomenology as the study method. Due to the importance of the sustainability standard topic in the world as an instrument, this study designed a semi-structured interview and a focus group for hotel owners, and an interview conducted with the players of the tourism industry. Results and Discussions: This study yielded results regarding the knowledge on sustainability and the standard perceived by the aforementioned players, as well as the entrepreneurs' perception in being aware of how important implementing this standard is notwithstanding the financial, social, and environmental benefits for the organizational context. However, some of them feel concern for and rejection to the mandatory nature of this process, because they do not have the same guarantees as large companies do. Conclusions: As regards the actions they are willing to take to achieve the standard implementation and/or certification process, they mention the large investments they must make in terms of infrastructure and hiring of staff, among other things, which are not recovered within a short term.
